update on events

Hi,

Just a quick update – posted to the WSSSPE site (https://wssspe.researchcomputing.org.uk), facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/wssspe/?ref=br_tf), and mail list (http://lists.researchcomputing.org.uk/listinfo.cgi/wssspe-researchcomputing.org.uk):

1. The WSSSPE1 report is moving along – see https://github.com/danielskatz/WSSSPE If you want to contribute, contact a section lead.

2. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is in the progress of providing funding that will support three WSSSPE activities:

a. extended versions of WSSSPE1 papers in the Journal of Open Research Software (JORS) – details to be sent to WSSSPE1 paper authors fairly soon

b. a software-development focused workshop (WSSSPE1.1) at SciPy 2014 in Austin in July – details to come…

c. WSSSPE2 to be held at SC14 (if accepted) – again, details to come…

3. We’ve added a few things to the WSSSPE web site, including some reference material and a wiki, for anyone who wants to use it to discuss WSSSPE-related projects/ideas.

Progress in scientific research is dependent on the quality and accessibility of software at all levels and it is now critical to address many new challenges related to the development, deployment, and maintenance of reusable software. In addition, it is essential that scientists, researchers, and students are able to learn and adopt a new set of software-related skills and methodologies.

Established researchers are already acquiring some of these skills, and in particular a specialized class of software developers is emerging in academic environments who are an integral and embedded part of successful research teams.

WSSSPE provides a forum for discussion of the challenges, including both positions and experiences, and a forum for the community to assemble and act.
